GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

This intermediate level course introduces psychotherapists to the basics of highly regarded Dr. Arnold Lazarus' MultiModal Therapy (MMT). As most clinicians these days are in favor of using a broad-spectrum approach to treating patients, MMT strives to combine a broad and interactive set of systematic strategies and offers particular assessment tactics that enhance diagnosis, promote a focused range of effective interventions, and improve treatment outcomes. As a psychotherapeutic approach, this extensively researched and used model is based on technical eclecticism. Accordingly, the theoretical underpinnings of MMT rest on a broad-based social and cognitive learning theory, while also drawing on effective techniques from many additional disciplines - without necessarily subscribing to their particular theories.

Educational Objectives:

This course will teach psychotherapists to
  • Present the rationale for using a multimodal approach
  • Describe multimodal therapy's theoretical underpinnings
  • Appraise how multimodal methods differ from other assessment and treatment approaches
  • Differentiate between technical eclecticism and theoretical eclecticism
  • Describe the empirical status of multimodal therapy
