GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an intermediate level course about spousal and partner abuse. The course is based on the second edition of the classic book, The Battered Woman Syndrome, by Lenore Walker, Ed.D., published by Springer, Pub. (2000). Dr. Walker, without any doubt, has been the most prominent scholar, researcher, and advocate on the issues of domestic violence. This book was published 15 years after the publication of her groundbreaking book by the same title. The book discussed the complexities, detection, assessment, and intervention relative to battering relationships. It is based on Dr. Walker's research and theory and includes a comprehensive review of the literature on the topic. Walker's most important contributions have been identifying the phases in the cycle of violence and illuminating the societal factors that make abuse so prevalent in our culture.
