GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this intermediate level course you will become familiar with the purpose and process of clinical supervision. You will review the currently accepted models for conducting supervision, the requirements posed by various licensing bodies, the skills and qualities of supervisor and supervisee, which promote effective supervision, and the ethics associated with supervisory relationships. Whether your interest is simply the expansion of knowledge of all things clinical or whether you are considering becoming a supervisor, this course will expand your understanding of supervision and its impacts.
The course is composed of six articles. The first article provides a thorough review of the models of supervision, the requirements for supervision of trainees in Psychology, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapy (with emphasis on California laws and regulations) and the qualities and skills associated with effective supervisors and trainees. The second article reviews all aspects of ethics and laws which are relevant to the supervisory experience. The third article identifies the expectations that trainees have about supervision structure, communication and process. The fourth article provides a critical review of current articles and models of multicultural supervision. The fifth article provides some elucidation about what the supervisory process actually entails. The final article is outlines the issues and impacts of providing cross-cultural supervision (doing supervision with a trainee from a culture different than the supervisor's own).
