GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this intermediate level course you will learn the distinctions between therapy and coaching, and consulting and coaching, as well as unique skills that lend themselves to offering life coaching as a professional service to clients who do not need psychotherapy. You will also learn how to take the principles of coaching to a wider market by doing telephone coaching with clients all over the globe. Learn from the originator of life coach training for mental health professionals and add this lucrative practice to your business, or learn how to make the transition to full-time.
The course is composed of six articles. The first, Why Therapists As Life Coaches?, describes why Life Coaching has emerged as a profession and why therapists are well positioned to add this to their practice. The second article, The History and Evolution of Life Coaching, gives a well-grounded historical perspective of how Life Coaching emerged. The third article, Coaching vs. Psychotherapy: The Great Debate, clarifies the contextual framework and distinctions in coaching and counseling. The fourth article, The Coaching Evolution (and Revolution), shows how coaching has evolved in the corporate and business setting and offers distinctions among coaching, counseling and consulting, as well as a perspective that is useful for working with executives or corporations. The fifth article, Dysfunction or Discovery: A Former Therapist's Case for Executive Coaching, is a case history approach to delineating executive coaching from a whole-person perspective and also discusses the usefulness of assessments in coaching. The sixth article is titled The Potential Perils of Personal Issues in Coaching: The Continuing Debate: Therapy or Coaching? It traces the distinctions, again, between coaching and counseling, but also goes "crossing the line" -- when to make referrals to a therapist or to consult with a trained therapist about a coaching client.
