GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

Drug and alcohol addiction has become rampant across the globe. War, once the most common topic in the news and magazines, has taken a backseat to the celebrity body count associated with alcohol and drug addiction. The victims of this disease grow younger every year, and the drugs of choice expand on what seems like a daily basis.

This introductory course incorporates articles that review the basic elements of identification, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for alcohol and drug abuse and addiction. The first set of articles review basic information about the most popular classes of drugs of choice. The second set of articles summarizes information about alcoholism and its treatment. The third set of articles present a variety of treatment interventions and protocols for drug addiction and the fourth set articulates the pro and con arguments on the hotly debated topic of the legalization of drugs. Finally, resources are provided for both the general public and the clinician.
